FEDERAL National Party leader Warren Truss has made his first Tweed-specific election promise to combat Labor’s near-$10 million in pledges to the shire so far.
Mr Truss said a Coalition Government would provide $150,000 for closed circuit television (CCTV) for the Banora Point Shopping Centre and surrounding areas to improve local security and crack down on anti-social behaviour.
He made the announcement during a visit to Banora Point yesterday, flanked by Nationals colleagues including Richmond candidate Alan Hunter and state MP Geoff Provest.
But the funding announced was a drop in the ocean compared to the $9.7 million in local election promises made in total so far by sitting Richmond Labor MP Justine Elliot in the past week.
“We’re working on future funding announcements for the area,” Mr Truss said.
The Nationals leader told the Tweed Daily News he would be back in the shire next week, but remained tight-lipped on the nature of the visit.
Nationals candidate Mr Hunter said he was not in the habit of announcing policies he knew could not be kept.
Tweed Valley Neighbourhood Watch honorary secretary Gordon Levenson said the community group welcomed the $150,000 announcement.
“CCTV has been a proven success in Murwill-umbah and Kingscliff. I think it’s a great help for police to have,” Mr Levenson said.
“Banora Point definitely needs it. There are a lot of elderly people around here who are concerned about their safety.”
Last week, Labor Richmond MP Justine Elliot promised $7 million for a GP Super Clinic in Tweed Heads and $1.2 million for Tweed and Murwillumbah hospitals, and on Monday pledged $1.5 million for a new community centre in Murwillumbah. Earlier in the morning, Mr Truss and Mr Hunter and Tweed MP Geoff Provest met members of the fishing industry in Tweed Heads to discuss the Federal Government’s proposed marine park plan which includes a large body of water off the Tweed coast.
Later in the afternoon they discussed a proposed Kirkwood Road interchange for the Banora Point Pacific Highway upgrade with Tweed Heads South business leaders.
