The Hobart City Council is moving to improve public safety in Elizabeth Mall and the bus mall.
Lord Mayor Rob Valentine says council has approved the immediate purchase of 10 new CCTV cameras.
The mall's sound system will also be updated to allow music to be played at certain times of day.
Alderman Valentine says appropriate surveillance is an important part of public safety.
"Council is wanting to make sure that the mall is covered in terms of surveillance, obviously the sorts of cameras that are operating there are taking footage but the footage is obviously only accessed when there is a reason to do so," he said.
